, there was an article in the new york times -- i think it was on friday -- in which unnamed u.s. officials were suggesting that morsi might have learned from the last couple of weeks that winner take all is not the way to go and that he needs to reach out to his political opponents. do you think that the brotherhood understands this referendum as in part a referendum on the way it's running politics in egypt? >> to some extent yes, but i think there's a bigger problem here. the brotherhood is in full existential mode. they're extremely paranoid. they believe that opposition is out to destroy them. they think liberals are anti- democratic and are out to bring down who they view to be elected and legitimately elected president. so they're very much in that mode of thinking. and that's why essentially one of their justifications for the authoritarian november 22 decree is -- and brotherhood leaders actually told me this -- is yes, we know it looks bad, we know it's kind of anti- democratic, but the normal rules of politics are suspended until future notice because we are in this fu

midwest, forced more than 1,600 flight cancelations in the u.s. alone and laguardia, for example, hundreds -- thousands of people were forced to rebook their flights. same story in chicago, where the storm canceled hundreds of flights there alone and the last two days have been pretty rough for drivers across the country, notary for some. the west coast may see problems thanks to another storm system and also problems in upstate new york and pennsylvania perhaps with new snowfall there. and air travel today is improving, aaa, they say it will be a busy few days for holiday travelers, and they have forecast about 93 million total travelers, the vast majority of those will be by car, 84 million, and those that are driving this holiday season, they are getting a little good news, gas prices are actually down from a month ago. $3.24 a gallon unleaded. air travel moving pretty well in atlanta today. a different story than what we've seen the past couple of days. alex. >> good luck maneuvering the traffic behind you there. people pulling up for their flights. thank you, gabe gutierrez.

suggest that of all the myriad questions one could ask about the future of u.s. detention policy in the war on terrorism, the government's ability to detain without trial individuals suspected of involvement in terrorism, it seems that the one that dominates all others is the extent to which future u.s. to some policy will and should be subject to judicial review. why is this not settled? well, if you the citizens and non-citizens, i think it's both sold and moved that these dissensions will be subject to review, settled because we have a series of cases in the early part of the last decade or the courts actually rejected arguments offered by the bush and restoration that such cases raised a political question settled because these individuals clearly have rights of the constitution including the right tit review and neat because dss has not picked up anyone hitting this category and subject -- subjected them to end of military tension says it doesn't three. there have only been three cases in custody their detention in austin years now, and i think that's partly going to stay for a

assault weapons manufactured in the u.s. also banned the manufacture of high-capacity magazines, the ones that hold more than ten bullets. there were plenty of loopholes, though, gun manufacturers could make minor modifications and then rename them, in a sense making them legal. also, there was no ban on the import of assault weapons from overseas. you see, the ban was only for american-made guns. any guns or high-capacity magazines manufactured before the ban could still be owned and used legally. when it comes to gun bans, the states have taken the lead. california went full speed ahead after a shooting in elementary school in stockton in 1989. they banned the manufacturer, transport, import, or sale of assault weapons, also now bans sales to felons and drug addicts and requires safety training, a ten-day waiting period and outlaws those high-capacity magazines that hold more than ten bullets. other states also limit who can own guns and guns that can be carried with or without a permit. how prevalent are they really? well, there are around 270 million guns in this country that are priv

difficult to pass regulations that restrict gun ownership. >> this isn't even the first time that a u.s. president has asked for gun laws on assault rifles and those gun clips. what is different this first time around? and will that make a difference? >> i think the difference here is that children were involved. i don't care where you live, who you are, whether you're a gun enthusiast or not. you look at this and say we've got to find a way to prevent this from happening. you know, the nra is saying you need trained security people to protect these schools. other people are saying, no, we need no more guns. is it realistic to think we can eliminate all guns? probably not. you know something? i think we're at a tipping point now where people are saying we need new laws. we need something. something to prevent this. and my feeling is, in the end, they're going to go after these assault weapons and high-capacity clips so that somebody can't go in with a gun that can fire large amounts of ammunition. i think probably that's an area that everybody -- most people will agree with now and then
